EAFC 26 Custom Tactics Guide — High Press / Balanced / Park Bus
Custom Tactics in EA Sports FC are how Elite players adapt mid-match. Setting them right is more impactful than your formation choice. This guide gives you 3 preset Custom Tactics (slots 1/2/3 in-match), the depth + width math, and the exact triggers for switching.
How Custom Tactics work in EAFC 26
You have 5 Custom Tactic slots per squad. Set them in Squad Management. In-match: L1 + D-pad up/right/down/left activates Tactic 1/2/3/4. Two types of settings:
- Defensive Style — Drop Back / Pressure on Heavy Touch / Aggressive Interceptions / Constant Pressure.
- Offensive Style — Counter-Attack / Quick Build Up / Balanced / Possession.
- Depth (1-100) — how high your defensive line sits. Higher = more aggressive press but more counter-attack risk.
- Width (1-100) — how wide your players spread. Higher = wider attacks but more central gaps.
Tactic 1 — High Press preset
- Defensive Style: Aggressive Interceptions
- Offensive Style: Quick Build Up, Direct Passing
- Depth: 85
- Width: 50
- Player Instructions: Wingers — Stay Wide. CDM — Stay Back. CAM — Get Forward. STs — Get in Behind.
Triggers: Losing 0-1 at 60+ min; need to force goals; opponent parking the bus.
High Press wins late goals but bleeds counter-attack damage. Don't use full match.
Tactic 2 — Balanced preset (default)
- Defensive Style: Pressure on Heavy Touch
- Offensive Style: Balanced, Mixed Passing
- Depth: 65
- Width: 50
- Player Instructions: Wingers — Mixed. CDMs — Stay Back. CAM — Free Roam. STs — Stay Forward.
Triggers: Default 1st half setting; 0-0 game state; balanced opponent.
This is your home base. Switch to Tactic 1 or 3 based on game state.
Tactic 3 — Park the Bus preset
- Defensive Style: Drop Back, Compact Lines
- Offensive Style: Counter-Attack, Long Ball
- Depth: 45
- Width: 35
- Player Instructions: Wingers — Stay Wide. CDMs — Cover Center. CAM — Stay Back. STs — Get in Behind.
Triggers: Winning 1-0 in last 5 minutes; vs faster opponent; vs Elite player with skill-move attack.
Park Bus is throwing 50-50 if you don't have pace counter-attackers. Mbappé / Haaland on counter is meta.
Optional Tactic 4 — Possession preset
- Defensive Style: Drop Back
- Offensive Style: Possession, Short Passing
- Depth: 55
- Width: 60
- Player Instructions: CDMs — Press on Heavy Touch. CAM — Free Roam. STs — Drop Back.
Triggers: Possession comp (Pedri + De Bruyne in midfield); vs aggressive opponent who needs to chase.
Tactic-switching triggers — the 5 mid-match cues
- Score 1-0 lead at 75 min: Switch to Tactic 3 (Park Bus) immediately.
- Concede 0-1 at 60 min: Switch to Tactic 1 (High Press) and force tempo.
- Drawn 1-1 in last 10 min: Tactic 1 + push for winner (high risk/high reward).
- Winning 2-0 at 70 min: Tactic 3 (Park Bus) immediately; preserve lead.
- 0-0 stalemate at 50 min: Stay on Tactic 2 Balanced; don't over-commit.
The Elite tactic-switching habit
Elite players switch tactics 3-5 times per match. Division 5 players stick with one tactic and lose 50% of games on poor adaptation. Practice switching with muscle memory: L1 + D-pad up = Tactic 1, D-pad right = Tactic 2, D-pad down = Tactic 3. Repeat in skill games until automatic.
Common Tactics-rank mistakes
- Sticking with default Tactic 2 for full 90 minutes
- Switching to High Press at 0-0 (lose counter risk)
- Park-Bus 5-3-2 with no pace striker
- Not setting Custom Tactics 1/3 at all (only Tactic 2 default)
- Switching tactics every 5 minutes (no commit)
Drill: 7-day tactic-switching mastery
Day 1-2: Set up Custom Tactics 1/2/3 with the presets above. Day 3-4: Play 5 Squad Battle games practicing the switch (Tactic 1 if losing, Tactic 3 if winning last 5 min). Day 5-7: Play 5 Rivals games tracking tactic-switches per match. Target: 3-5 switches per game. By day 7 the switch is muscle memory.
